ISLAMIC, 'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Rashid, AH 170-193 / AD 786-809. Hemidrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 1.94 g, 6 h), citing governor Maʿadd, Tabaristan , PYE 138 = AH 172 = AD 789. Draped Sasanian-style bust to right, wearing an elaborate crown; behind head, ‘GDE ʾp̄zwt’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘Maʿadd’ (‘Maʿadd’ in Arabic); in outer margin to left and right, ‘nywk' ˗ ʾp̄d’ (‘good ˗ wonderful’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar, flanked by two attendants; above altar, crescent and star; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, ‘tpwlstʾn’ (‘Tabaristan’ in Pahlavi). Album 66. Very rare. Struck from somewhat worn dies, otherwise, very fine.
